Research Program Coordinator

Job Description

The Department of International Health is seeking a Research Program Coordinator to join as an integral member of our research team. Under supervision of the Principal Investigator (PI), the Research Program Coordinator will support the scientific, logistical, administrative, and financial planning and implementation of several maternal and newborn health research studies within the Department of International Health. The primary responsibility will be to serve as a research coordinator for a community-based, longitudinal cohort study to describe the demographic, socioeconomic, and behavioral drivers of the vaginal microbiota and associations with adverse pregnancy outcomes in rural Bangladesh. The position requires precise attention to detail in developing research plans, consent forms, and protocols; coordinating and monitoring study data collection activities; preparing submissions and reports to ethical committees; purchasing and shipping equipment and supplies; and tracking project activities and preparing narrative and financial reports and presentations. The Research Program Coordinator may also support development of new grant submissions. The position may include travel to Bangladesh to manage study activities or other countries for academic meetings. There may also be opportunities for involvement in scientific activities, including literature reviews, statistical analyses, and publications.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Draft research plans, consent forms, data collection instruments, and study protocols.
  • Build relationships with JHU faculty and staff and personnel at research field site.
  • Coordinate inputs from team members and manage detailed study documentation.
  • Work with field team to monitor study implementation according to protocols.
  • Prepare data summaries to monitor study progress and quality control.
  • Build spreadsheets to estimate/track study human resource and supplies requirements.
  • Develop and maintain timelines to track study implementation progress.
  • Prepare new submissions and support regular reporting to ethical review committees.
  • Manage purchasing and shipment of equipment and supplies for research studies.
  • Track project activities and prepare reports and presentations for funding agencies.
  • Support financial analysts to prepare financial projections and expense reports.
  • Schedule team meetings, develop agendas, and document/circulate notes.
  • Maintain knowledge of and comply with GCP and JHSPH IRB policies.
  • Some international travel may be required to attend meetings at field sites.
  • Apply a high level of organization, attention to detail, and time management to coordinate multiple research activities.
  • Work independently and communicate frequently via email/Slack/Zoom with the PI, JHU team, and field site teams.


Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Content knowledge in maternal/newborn health and/or reproductive and sexual health.
  • Understanding of clinical trials or community-based research studies/methods.
  • Excellent written communication skills for academic research studies.
  • Meticulous attention to detail and digital organizational skills.
  • Proficiency in building Excel spreadsheets, PowerPoint presentations.
  • Cross-cultural understanding and strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and coordinate a multidisciplinary team.
  • Problem-solving thinking and flexibility in face of changes.
  • Quantitative analytical, data management, and/or statistical programming skills.
  • Familiarity with GCP and operations of IRBs and DSMBs.



Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in related discipline.
  • Additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with clinical trials or community-based research studies/methods.
  • Experience with maternal and newborn and/or reproductive and sexual health issues.
