About the Department

The Department of Molecular Biomedical Sciences trains Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and graduate students interested in research-based careers focused on the discovery of new knowledge about animals and human health and disease, and using those findings to enhance animal and human health and well-being. Students get in-depth knowledge of the molecular mechanisms of disease, and experience in the development of new procedures which enable its prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.

Our faculty are recognized experts in the fields of cell biology and physiology, cancer biology, developmental biology, environmental science and toxicology, genomics, infectious diseases, neuroscience, pharmacology, radiology, and reproductive biology. Our goals are to advance veterinary medical science through innovative basic and applied research, and by mentoring and inspiring students, providing world-class clinical and diagnostic services, and offering the public the latest knowledge through innovative extension and engagement activities. Our research faculty works in state-of-the-art research facilities, including a transgenic mouse facility where graduate students can participate in research projects related to mouse and animal genomics.

A number of graduate programs are available to students interested in working with faculty in the Department of Molecular Biomedical Sciences. In addition, faculty oversee the following clinical sections: anesthesia, clinical nutrition, pharmacology, and the radiology residency.

Essential Job Duties

Description of Work Duties The Translational Research in Pain (TRiP) Program and the Pain & Itch Neurobiology Lab (PINLAB) at North Carolina State University are looking for a dynamic, hard-working, highly motivated, and talented research associate for a position immediately available. The successful applicant is expected to support Drs. Lascelles & Mishra’s research efforts in a highly independent manner and are expected to make presentations regarding his/her research, publish their research results in peer-reviewed journals, participate in grant proposal preparation, and interact with other faculty, postdoctoral associates, and graduate students and train postdocs, graduate student at the University level and across collaborating institutions of the project. All aspects of work will be closely mentored to transition the incumbent to be an independent investigator/researcher. Specifically, duties are likely to include but are not restricted to:

Research experience
  • Molecular and Cellular Assays: Experience with basic benchtop molecular and cellular assays (e.g., RNA isolation, cDNA preparation, primer design, RT-qPCR, HEK expression system),
  • Protein Analysis: Experience with Western blot, immunohistochemistry/immunofluorescent assays, 
  • Microscopy: Proficient in Fluorescent and confocal microscopy
  • Tissue Processing: Experience with harvesting, fixing, and cryosectioning various tissues from normal and transgenic mice). 

Behavioral assays
  • Pain assays: Experience with behavioral pain assays (Hargreaves, hot, cold, mechanical, Randall Selitto, SHIM/weight bearing, catwalk in mice and rats and other behaviors that are commonly used in the labs), experience working with dogs, including testing pain behaviors and analyzing data
  • Behavioral data analysis: Ability to analyze and interpret behavioral data, including statistical analysis and graph preparation

Mouse colony management 
  • Genotyping: Experience with genotyping various mouse lines using PCR, sequencing or other methods
  • Mouse identification: Able to identify and manage mouse lines from record keeping and database management

Minimum Education and Experience

Relevant Master’s degree, or relevant Bachelor’s and 3 or more years of relevant experience, relevant independent experience and education.

  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Ability to coordinate and prioritize multiple concurrent projects.
  • Accurate record keeping
  • Desire and willingness to learn and to rise to new challenges.
  • Project management: Able to handle multiple projects between two labs, prioritize tasks and meet deadline
  • Training students: Experience training students (undergraduates, graduates, and postdocs) and teaching laboratory techniques
  • Grant and manuscript writing skills: Preferred experience with grant and manuscript writing, including preparing figures, tables, and text
  • Communication skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English with the ability to communicate complex concepts to scientific and non-scientific audiences
  • Lab management: Experience with managing protocols, inspection, lab items inventory, and lab safety-related items)

Preferred Qualifications

Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate (e.g., M.D., D.V.M., Sc.D.) with a background in pain research and/or neuroscience.
