As an intern with the FPS IT Security and Customer Services Group, you may…..
- Shadow experienced professionals, including Information Systems Security Officers (ISSOs), Department Security Representatives, IT Security Help Desk Specialists, and Vulnerability Operations Analysts.
- Assist with analyzing and addressing cybersecurity risks and vulnerabilities.
- Learn about managing system security, compliance, and operations in line with established frameworks and policies.
- Gain hands-on experience in incident response, vulnerability scanning, and security assessments.
- Explore techniques to improve customer service in IT security support and operations.
- Participate in team discussions to develop innovative solutions for security and operational challenges.
- Contribute to group projects aimed at enhancing the organization's IT security posture.
Qualifications
You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...
- Are working towards Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Ph.D degree in Cybersecurity, Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
- Basic understanding of IT systems, networking, or cybersecurity concepts (e.g., firewalls, malware, vulnerability scanning).
- Proficiency in using common IT tools and software (e.g., Microsoft Office, ticketing systems, or basic cybersecurity tools).
- Willingness to learn and adapt to new technologies and processes.
- Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Have a minimum 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale.
- Are able to obtain an Interim Secret level security clearance by your start date and can ultimately obtain a Secret level clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

- Familiarity with security frameworks like NIST, ISO 27001, or similar standards.
- Experience with IT support or help desk environments.
- Basic knowledge of scripting or programming languages (e.g., Python, PowerShell).
- Previous coursework or certifications in cybersecurity or IT (e.g., CompTIA Security+, Certified Ethical Hacker).
- Hands-on experience with vulnerability scanning tools, endpoint protection software, or other security-related technologies.

The referenced pay range is based on JHU APL’s good faith belief at the time of posting. Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as geographic location, work experience, market conditions, education/training and skill level with consideration for internal parity. For salaried employees scheduled to work less than 40 hours per week, annual salary will be prorated based on the number of hours worked. APL may offer bonuses or other forms of compensation per internal policy and/or contractual designation. Additional compensation may be provided in the form of a sign-on bonus, relocation benefits, locality allowance or discretionary payments for exceptional performance. APL provides eligible staff with a comprehensive benefits package including retirement plans, paid time off, medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short-term disability, long-term disability, flexible spending accounts, education assistance, and training and development.
