Position Summary

Reporting to the Assistant VP, IT Client Services, the Assistant Director of Configuration Management Database (CMDB) & IT Asset Management oversees the entire lifecycle management of IT assets, including laptops, desktops, peripherals, and software, and is responsible for the overall health, integrity, and strategic roadmap of the organization’s CMDB

This role is the primary contact for all requests, initiatives, and tasks related to device and software management along with the CMDB. They are responsible for maintaining a comprehensive IT inventory and managing and continuously evolving the CMDB data model and architecture to align with business and IT service needs. 

The Assistant Director also acts as a liaison with vendors responsible for asset procurement and secure disposal of decommissioned items, and oversees inventory-related finances.

Essential Functions

Oversees all aspects of IT asset management, including comprehensive inventory data accuracy and accessibility, and manages relationships with vendors and service providers involved in procurement, maintenance, and secure disposal.

Manages the day-to-day activities of CMDB processes, including establishing priorities, assigning work, tracking compliance to policies, resolving or escalating compliance issues, facilitating Configuration Management audits, and reviewing critical incident outage resolution results related to the Configuration Management System (CMS), along with dispositions of failed changes.

Facilitates communication and engages business and IT management to encourage Configuration Management efforts, value propositions, and chairs the Configuration Control Board (CCB), enacting directed changes.

Provides and approves all requirements, use cases, and user stories to support new or improved CMS functionality, and reviews and publishes configuration management reporting.

Ensures prompt deployment of equipment for new hires and manages the retrieval or transfer of equipment for departing employees; collaborates with the Endpoint Services team to facilitate the setup and deployment of equipment; collaborates with information security team members to ensure the secure handling and disposal of sensitive data on IT assets.

Leads strategic IT asset initiatives, such as the laptop-first program, overseeing replacement schedules, and suggesting new inventory items based on community feedback.

Performs data analysis and forecasting for IT assets, generating reports, analyzing data for strategic decision-making, forecasting asset needs, developing end-of-life plans, and identifying potential issues.

Ensures compliance, financial oversight, and continuous improvement for IT assets and CMDB, which includes maintaining regulatory compliance and internal policies, recommending new procedures, overseeing inventory-related finances (budgeting, forecasting, cost optimization), continually researching best practices, recommending new tools/policies, and creating/managing OKRs related to asset management.

Management Responsibilities

Supervises the work of other Fordham employees who are individual contributors. Responsible for hiring, training and developing, managing performance and administering corrective action. Has significant input in compensation decisions.

Additional Functions

Conducts regular audits of IT assets and the CMDB to ensure compliance with license agreements, regulatory standards, and internal policies, addressing any discrepancies or non-compliance issues as needed.

Ensures staff are equipped to effectively manage IT assets and the CMDB, and support organizational objectives.

Manages change related to IT asset and CMDB management initiatives, including communication, stakeholder engagement, and impact assessment, ensuring smooth transition and adoption of new processes or technologies.

Leads and facilitates meetings related to assets and the CMDB, actively collaborates with stakeholders, and offers recommendations based on expertise and insight.


Required Qualifications: Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in a computer or information systems field, or in lieu of a degree a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience.

Minimum of 5 years of experience in IT asset management or related roles, with progressively increasing responsibility and leadership experience, specifically including experience with CMDB management

Minimum of three years managing technical staff.


Required Qualifications: Knowledge and Skills

Strong understanding of IT asset management and CMDB tools, principles, practices, and methodologies, such as ITIL (Information Technology Infrastructure Library).

Experience managing a large-scale IT asset management program, covering hardware and software, including developing and implementing policies and procedures using tools like ServiceNow, with significant experience in CMDB implementation and maintenance.

Project management skills, with experience leading asset and CMDB management projects from planning to implementation.

Familiarity with regulatory requirements and compliance standards related to IT asset management and CMDB, such as software licensing agreements and data privacy regulations.

Strong leadership and team management abilities, capable of motivating and developing IT professionals; effective in fast-paced, dynamic environments, with flexibility to adapt to evolving priorities and requirements

Working knowledge of Google Suite, MS Office Suite (Windows, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Project, Visio), and Project Mgmt systems.

Proficient in communication and interpersonal skills, adept at conveying technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders; demonstrates exceptional customer service skills.

Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.


Preferred Qualifications

Demonstrated understanding of Fordham’s culture and environment, as well as the technical, business, and cultural environment of higher education in general

Knowledge of the unique challenges and requirements of asset and CMDB management in an educational setting.

Experience with vendor management, including contract negotiation, vendor selection, and performance management

Knowledge of Information Technology Service Management (ITSM) and associated applications, particularly those related to CMDB.

Professional certifications related to IT asset management, such as Certified IT Asset Manager (CITAM) or Certified Software Asset Manager (CSAM), or certifications related to Configuration Management (e.g., ITIL Service Transition or Service Operation).
