Job Description
Under general supervision of the Vice President of Instruction and within the Professional and Technical Studies Division, the Early Childhood Education (ECE) Instructor/Program Coordinator is responsible for teaching ECE courses and planning, developing and maintaining the ECE program. The individual in this position works closely with the on-campus Child Development Center, other agencies and the local early childhood education professional community to provide optimal education, experiences, and support for student success and workforce development.

Required Qualifications
  • Master’s in child development, early childhood education, human development, home economics/family and consumer studies with a specialization in child development/early childhood education, educational psychology with a specialization in child development/early childhood education OR
  • Bachelor’s in any of the above AND
  • Master’s in social work, educational supervision, elementary education, special education, psychology, bilingual/bicultural education, life management/home economics, family life studies, or family and consumer studies OR
  • Possession of a valid California Community College Instructor Credential authorizing service in the discipline OR the equivalent
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic and socio-economic, cultural, disability and ethnic backgrounds of community college students and staff
  • Two or more years’ experience working directly with young children ages zero through five in an early childhood setting.

Desirable Qualifications
    • Current knowledge and mastery in the field of early childhood education and child development.
    • Knowledge of the regulations in California regarding employment of early care and education professionals and California’s delivery system of early childhood education programs.
    • Knowledge and interest in maintaining curriculum related to elementary teacher preparation.
    • Mentoring or training experience teaching adults to work with young children.
    • Two or more years’ experience directing or administering program(s) for young children and/or families.
    • Building and maintaining relationships with community organizations and local employers.

 

  • Knowledge of online learning management systems, specifically Canvas.
  • Community college teaching experience.

Essential Duties
  • Teach a range of early childhood education (ECE) courses including general education, lab and lecture courses, both on campus and through distance education.
  • Develop and revise curriculum to meet changing state and federal regulations, and requirements specific to the Child Development Permit Matrix and workforce development needs (e.g., universal pre-kindergarten).
  • Create and implement culturally responsive and equity minded course material, teaching practices, and learning assessment strategies that enhance student success and persistence toward academic/career goals and that help close equity gaps and promote social justice.
  • Collaborate with Child Development Center staff on practicums/labs for best practices, scheduling, student learning and workforce preparation.
  • Fulfill non-teaching assignments such as scheduled office hours, selection of textbooks, evaluation of course materials, curriculum development, student advising, program promotion, and participation in departmental meetings, and in shared governance committees, including the Academic Senate.
  • Communicate and collaborate with associate faculty on scheduling, the assessment of student learning, instructional strategies and new developments in the field.
  • Complete program reviews, budget development and the assessment of student learning at the course and program levels.
  • Assist in the development of recruitment materials and participate in recruitment activities.
  • Ensure ECE advisory committee compliance.
  • Connect with local employers, public and private agencies, and professional organizations that services to children and families.
  • Provide academic and career advising to new and continuing students and facilitate student attainment of certificates and permits by guiding and informing students of options and procedures.
  • Act as a Professional Growth Advisor to permit holders in conjunction with advisers in the community.
  • Seek and coordinate grants and special projects and ensure continued participation in support to students such as the California Early Childhood Mentor Program and the Child Development Training Consortium.
  • Maintain contact with local employers and public and private agencies providing services to children and families.
  • Participate in professional organizations and community partnerships as related to the early childhood education profession and community.
  • Participate in professional growth activities and remain current in subject matter and instructional strategies and technologies.
  • Fulfill college duties such as scheduled office hours, selection of textbooks, evaluation of course materials, curriculum development, catalog review, peer reviews and participation on area, college and shared governance committees.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

$72,086 - $128,593 annually
